I’ve been looking for a car to strip out and trailer-to-a-track for a week or two now. Stipulations are 180hp+ and sub £1000. Anyway I came across this V6 406 Coupe, it may be FWD but just look at it. Duurtlang was right all this time. Shame it’s 200 miles away, if it was on my doorstep I’d go and have a look, and probably clean her up and keep her :/

That V6 will be heavy on the ‘ol tyres. What about a Puma? There’s about 358 million of them on any selling platform....

I’d really prefer RWD or 4WD for track use. Honestly, I’d just end up keeping the Peugeot, and I don’t need another car on the road.

Ideally I would want RWD, but I seem to remember the old 1.7 in the Puma being really good to upgrade? I know theres still a few fans of them out there.

Duurtlang was right all this time.

This is what I like to hear. Seriously though, that car is insanely cheap. The UK market is an odd one. Having said that, I’m not a fan of the pealing clear coat.

I love this car. Beautiful lines and curves.

Probably one of the best looking Peugeot in the last 20 years.

With Richard Parry-Jones chassis tuning and Fiesta underpinnings, it has a very good reputation for feel and agility. A little down on power but this could be a good place to start:

Nice :) bit of a floppy chassis stock, but a strut-tower brace (I think they’re standard on the V6) has sorted out my mate’s one nicely. He’s been surprised by how well it handles too.

There’s a chap on his 406 forum that’s converting one to MR with a twin-turbo V6. Looks like an absolute monster...

At least it’s an easy fix if the underpinnings are all right. Two big flat panels to re-laquer? Simple! And you know I think you’ve always been right about the Coupé, don’t you? I still drool a bit over yours. The low cost is probably just due to age and cost to tax/insure. The need to put this on the road would make it a no go for me :(

Are they really that expensive to tax/insure in the UK? Even for someone past their early 20s? I pay less than €30 a month in insurance for mine (2.0), and I’ve only officially owned a car since 2010. I even have it registered with an LPG conversion, which to an insurance company means it’s a vehicle that’s going to be driven a lot.

Damn you. You’ve got me looking at Autotrader. Found a lovely RCR GT40 and a beautiful Holden SS.

I HOPE YOUR HAPPY NOW!!!!!

Actually because it’s pre-2001, the tax is only £230 p/a. After 2001 it would be in the £505 p/a tax bracket. Dodged a bullet there. Not sure about insurance, but I’ll be sure to check once I’ve finished worked. Goddamnit, I’m actually considering this.

That’s about 80 miles away. Plrase go see it for me??? There are times when I envy you southern softies. Mainly because of your vehicle density because of your population density, which curiously is the same reason that I don’t envy you.

Oh, that’s not too far from me. Want to buy my E30 instead? It would need a turbo or something to make 180bhp, though.

Alternatively, if it’s for trackday use, have you seen the price of RX-8s? I think they’re all £500+ a year for road tax, so for track-only, they’re insanely cheap.

The only problem I have with cheap auto Bavaria is the rust/structural issues, how does yours look underneath? Peugeots of this era happen to have absolutely superb rust resistance. An RX8 always seemed more trouble than it’s worth, but I suppose if I get the right motor she’d be a good track attacker.

Ad’s here if you want to have a look:

http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?na…

No significant rust as far as I know - one of the jacking points is a bit crumbly, but generally seems solid.

Take the price as being very flexible, especially if the car’s going to stay on Oppo.

As far as RX-8s go, I understand that the apex seal problem isn’t as much of a problem as people make out - you may have to rebuild an engine every few years, but it’s not actually that big a job. And they’re so unbelievably cheap...

Also stupid-cheap at the moment are Alfa GTs, but while beautiful, they’re not exactly trackday material.

What kind of car are you looking for? If it’s a nimble hot hatch, this isn’t it. If it’s a sporty GT, a great highway cruiser, this is it.

There was one for way under a grand on gumtree not too far from here I believe just a few days ago. Just browse gumtree for cars under 1500£ and pick larger engine sizes. There are great deals on there every day. Or don’t, in case I am interested in that particular car. :p

Just something fun to chuck around on a track and not care about too much when I inevitably bin it into a corner. I’m aware the Coupé isn’t the right choice, but for that price it’s just so tempting.

Haha yeah. Well, I’d be happy to help you if you are planning to look at a few cars, probably helps to have an extra pair of eyes and two drivers. Also the only thing that keeps me from bankruptcy by buying cars is getting other people to buy them. Also #2: did you ever send me your phone number?
